The Usage of and Needs for Electronic Books: A Health Science Library, Prince of Songkla University User Study

Abstract
The objectives of this survey research were to investigate the current usage and users needs and reasons why e-books had not been used. The samples comprised of 301 medical instructors, residents, interns and the 2nd - 5th year medical students who were working and studying during the 2009/2010 academic year at the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University. The instrument for collecting data was a questionnaire. The findings were the following: 1) 63.6 percentage of the subjects had used e-books whereas 36.4 percentage had never. The purpose of using was for study, they preferred using e-book databases provided by library, and reading on screen. They accessed e-books by themselves at home and had never consulted the user guide for recommendations. The main problem faced by users was eyes strain. 2) The users needs for e-books were at high level. The convenient and faster access were needed most, the facilities needed most were network capacity and speed. The reasons for not using e-books were lack of knowledge on how to access and no tutors/consultants to act as a guide. However, non-users reported their willingness to use e-books in the future. The findings indicated that the library should actively promoting e-books through public relations, user guide, including library catalogue and also improving speed of the Internet network system capacity.

บทคัดย่อ
การวิ จั ยเชิงสํารวจนี้ มี วั ตถุประสงค เพื่ อศึกษา สภาพการใช ความตองการใช และสาเหตุที่ไมใช หนังสืออิเล็กทรอนิกสของหอสมุดวิทยาศาสตรสุขภาพ มหาวิ ทยาลั ยสงขลานคริ นทร กลุ  มตั วอย างเป น อาจารยแพทย แพทยประจําบาน แพทยใชทุน และ นักศึกษาแพทย ชั้นปที่ 2 ถึง ปที่ 5 ซึ่งกําลังปฏิบัติงาน และศึ กษาในปการศึกษา 2552/2553 ของคณะ แพทยศาสตร จํานวน 301 คน โดยใช แบบสอบถาม เปนเครื่องมือในการรวบรวมขอมูล ผลการวิจัย พบวา 1) กลุมตัวอยาง รอยละ 63.6 เคยใชหนังสืออิเล็กทรอนิกส ในขณะที่ รอยละ 36.4 ไมเคยใช โดยใชเพื่อการศึกษา จากฐานขอมูลหนังสืออิเล็กทรอนิกสที่หองสมุดบอกรับ และอานทันทีจากหนาจอ ส วนใหญใชจากที่ พักและ คนหาดวยตนเอง ไมเคยไดรับคําแนะนําวิธีการใช และ158 ปญหาที่ประสบคือการเมื่อยลาและปวดตาในขณะอาน 2) ความตองการใชหนังสื ออิเล็กทรอนิกสโดยรวม อยูในระดับมาก โดยเฉพาะดานความสะดวกรวดเร็วใน การคนหาขอมูล และดานการปรับปรุงสมรรถนะของ ระบบเครื อข ายคอมพิ วเตอร ให มีความเร็ วสูงขึ้ น 3) สาเหตุ ที่ไม ใช หนังสืออิ เล็กทรอนิ กส ของผู ที่ไม เคยใชคือ ไมทราบวิธีใชและไมมีผูแนะนํา แตผูที่ไมเคย ใชใหการยอมรับและตองการที่จะใชมากขึ้นในอนาคต ผลการวิจัยชี้ ให เห็นถึงความจําเป นของหองสมุดใน การส งเสริมใหมีการใชทั้งในดานการประชาสัมพั นธ การแนะนําวิธีการใช ตลอดจนการทํารายการ รวมทั้ง การปรับปรุงสมรรถนะระบบเครือขายอินเทอรเน็ตให มีความเร็วสูงขึ้น
