Abstract
A survey was conducted to study dairy cattle production systems and estimate production costs and problems associated with milk production in the south of Northern part of Thailand. The research took place in Sukhothai province in 2004 using questionnaires, and sampled 153 farmers and Dairy promotion organization officers in four milk collection centers for interview. Total dairy population was found to be 2,526 heads and 907 head milking cows. Farmers who raised dairy cattle started from 1-4, 5-10, and 11-20 heads were 84%, 12%, 4% respectively. Feeding systems, in the rainy season, and dry season were based on pasture grazing and cut-carry system (54.5%). The major problems found in the study were the high price of concentrate, lack of quantity and quality of the roughages, the high level of supplementation of concentrates and low fertility. The production cost is 7.5 baht per kilogram of milk. Most of the farmers are earning between 5,000 to 10,000 baht per month. Commercial concentrates of various sources were used at 1:2 concentrate: milk which affected on ultimate high cost of production. Based on this study, it was found that providing dairy cattle with sufficient quality roughage the year as well as lowering concentrate use, will enhance productivity and efficiency for more sustainable production and a higher income.
