Abstract
The research is a comparative study on the
designs of batik cloth in three Andaman provinces:
Phuket, Phang nga, and Krabi. To help analyze and
summarize the data, the researcher collected data
from in depth interviews, photographs, observations,
and related documents. The researcher interviewed
5 batik painters from each province; 15 painters in
total. The research shows that the designs of batik
cloth in Andaman provinces were developed from
nature. Most of the designs in Phuket, Phang nga,
and Krabi were of crabs, fish, prawns, shells, turtles,
and corals. Also, there were designs of flowers such
as orchids, roses, Leelawadee, Feungfah, Champa,
and Sri-trang. In addition, there were designs of
animals such as birds, elephants, horses, butterflies
as well as crabs, fish, prawns, and shells. Therefore,
the designs of batik cloth in three provinces were
not different. However, there were some differences
in peculiar Thai designs for example an applied
Kanok design was popular in Phuket, but not in
Phang nga and Krabi. As for geometric design, it
was popular in Phang nga, but not in Phuket and
Krabi. Furthermore, the uniqueness of the designs
in each province was different. In Phuket, Promthep
Cape, Sino-Portuguese architectures were dominant,
while Khao Tapu and Khao Chang designs were
outstanding in Phang nga. In Krabi, Paphiopedilum
(a kind of orchid), Gurneys Pitta (a kind of bird)
and Khao Khanap Nam designs were dominant. As
for the colors of batik designs in. Phuket, Phang nga,
and Krabi, pink, light blue, dark blue, violet, yellow,
and green were popular.
