Abstract

This research aims to study self-identification both in the novel and the film of Fight Club. The examination involves analysis of the protagonist’s problems, the process of self-identification and the evaluative comparison of both media. From the analysis, there are three major problems in the protagonist’s identity crisis : inner conflicts, interpersonal conflicts and social conflicts. Of these three, the inner conflicts are the most significant. The protagonist’s self-identification process mainly involves violence and aggressiveness as he believes they can assure him of his male identity. The film maintains the key message of self-identification of the novel. The presentation of self-identification in the film is, however, more effective because film techniques such as urrealism and lighting are able to bring the abstract description into vivid pictures.

บทคัดย่อ
งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งศึกษาการแสวงหาตัวตนในนวนิยายและภาพยนตร์เรื่องไฟท์คลับ โดยพิจารณาปัญหาและกระบวน การแสวงหาตัวตนของตัวเอก รวมทั้งเปรียบเทียบและประเมินประสิทธิภาพการนำเสนอของสื่อทั้งสอง ผลปรากฏว่า การขาดอัตลักษณ์ของตัวเอกมีสาเหตุจากปัญหาใหญ่ ๆ สามประการ คือ ความขัดแย้งภายในจิตใจ ความขัดแย้งระหว่าง บุคคล และความขัดแย้งทางสังคม แต่ความขัดแย้งภายในจิตใจจะเป็นปัญหาที่สำคัญที่สุด ส่วนกระบวนการที่ตัวเอก ใช้นั้นเกี่ยวข้องกับความรุนแรงและความก้าวร้าว ทั้งนี้เพราะตัวเอกเชื่อว่าทั้งสองอย่างสามารถแสดงถึงอัตลักษณ์ความ เป็นชายที่ขาดหายไปได้ การนำเสนอในภาพยนตร์ มีประเด็นหลักเหมือนกับนวนิยาย แต่ภาพยนตร์สามารถนำเสนอ ได้ดีกว่า เพราะมี เทคนิคทางภาพยนตร์ที่สามารถทำให้ คำบรรยายในหนังสือปรากฏเป็นรูปเป็นร่างชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น นอกจากนี้ เทคนิคเหนือจริง และแสงสี ทำให้ผู้กำกับสามารถสื่อความหมายให้ผู้ชมเข้าใจประเด็นที่ต้องการนำเสนอ ดียิ่งขึ้น
