Abstract

Cemetery has long been served as a funeral place for every man. Since it was traditionally related to supernatural beliefs, the number of activities in cemetery was limited. It was so until King Rama V Reign. When a rapid urban development in Bangkok revealed such obscure places, cemeteries, to the public and yet ruined the civilized image of newly westernized capital city. The emerging problem of cemetery forced the government to control and cemetery and funeral service providers. This problem has reflected that state authority in urban space management affecting the people’s ordinary life.

บทคัดย่อ
พื้นที่ป่าช้า มีความสำคัญในฐานะเป็นสถานที่ ประกอบพิธีศพอันเป็นพิธีกรรมสุดท้ายในชีวิตมนุษย์ พื้นที่ดังกล่าวเกี่ยวพันกับความเชื่อเรื่องผีและสิ่งเหนือ ธรรมชาติ ทำให้มีการใช้พื้นที่ป่าช้าอย่างจำกัดทั้ง การใช้ในด้านพิธีกรรมและสถานที่ตั้งในชุมชน สำหรับ สังคมในกรุงเทพฯพื้นที่ป่าช้าถูกใช้ในลักษณะข้างต้น จนกระทั่งสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 มีการพัฒนากรุงเทพฯ ด้าน กายภาพของเมือง ทำให้พื้นที่ซึ่งเคยถูกปกปิดซ่อนเร้น เปิดเผยมากขึ้นพร้อมกับปัญหาที่กระทบต่อภาพลักษณ์ ของความศิวิไลซ์ ของเมืองหลวงที่กำลังพัฒนาตาม แบบตะวันตก ปัญหาจากการใช้พื้นที่ป่าช้าของราษฎร ทำให้รัฐสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 มีส่วนสำคัญต่อการเข้ามา จัดการพื้นที่ป่าช้าและพิธีศพ ซึ่งสะท้อนถึงอำนาจ ของรัฐสมัยใหม่ที่เข้าไปเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในวิถีชีวิตราษฎร ผ่านการจัดการพื้นที่เมือง
