Abstract
This paper is based on a qualitative study of
Thai skilled migration to Australia focusing on the
transition period during which Thai overseas
students become skilled migrants. The research
employed two major qualitative techniques in the
fieldwork: participant observation and in-depth
interviewing from the Year 2007 to 2009. Twentyfive
Thai skilled migrants in Melbourne who initially
came to Australia for further education and then
applied for Australian permanent residence after
graduation generated the core data for the study.
This paper addresses six major steps in the process
of Thai skilled migration to Australia: 1) Transition
to be an overseas student in Australia 2) Coping with
culture shock 3) Migration decision making after
graduation 4) Thai settlement in Australia 5) Dual
ways of life 6) Ties to homeland.
