Abstract
The objectives of this study are to examine the identity of the Karen tribe of the Salween River Basin,
to investigate the factors contributing to changes of the Karen identity and to determine the different
dimensions of the Karens identity-establishing process. This study uses qualitative and quantitative
methodologies including interviews, questionnaires and observation as data-gathering tools. The qualitative
analysis of the data, conducted to interpret, verify and conclude the data, is based on the Participatory
Research (PR) and Ethnographic Delphi Futures Research (EDFR) techniques, whilst the quantitative data
is analysed using the SPSS programme. According to the study results, the identity of the Karen tribe of the
Salween River Basin can be described as follows: their language is subject to influence by some of the
Tibeto-Burman linguistic features. They are divided into animists, Buddhists and Christians, each group
practicing different rituals and ceremonies. They lead agricultural lives; their ways of life depend upon
natural resources, namely, soil, water, forests, mountains and water-courses. Factors leading to their identity
change include cash-crop cultivation problems, insufficient plantation areas, poverty, drug addiction,
trans-tribal marriages, trendy goods consumption, environmental degradation, area deprivation, traditional
beliefs and rituals diminution, improper values amongst youths, lack of continuity of customs and traditions,
concepts and mentality change. The Karens identity-establishing process containing the economic, the
social and environmental dimensions involves the symbol creation used in creatively designing home and
household textile products as far as the system of creative economy is concerned.

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาอัตลักษณ์ชนเผ่ากะเหรี่ยงในลุ่มน้ำสาละวิน ปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อการ
เปลี่ยนแปลงอัตลักษณ์ชนเผ่ากะเหรี่ยงและหารูปแบบกระบวนการอัตลักษณ์ชนเผ่ากะเหรี่ยงในมิติต่างๆ โดยใช้
ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพและเชิงปริมาณ เครื่องมือในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลใช้แบบสัมภาษณ์ แบบสอบถามและ
แบบสังเกต การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล เชิงคุณภาพ หาข้อสรุป การตีความและตรวจสอบความถูกต้อง ใช้กระบวนการ
เทคนิค PR (Participatory Research) และกระบวนการเทคนิค อนาคตเชิงมานุษยวิทยา EDFR (Ethnographic
Delphi Futures Research) ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณ วิเคราะห์ด้วยโปรแกรมสำเร็จรูป SPSS ผลการวิจัยพบว่าอัตลักษณ์
ชนเผ่ากะเหรี่ยงในลุ่มน้ำสาละวิน ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากภาษาของตระกูลธิเบต - พม่า นับถือผี ศาสนาพุทธ ศาสนา
คริสต์ ความเชื่อและพิธีกรรม ทางศาสนา เกษตรกรรม วิถีชีวิต อยู่แบบพึ่งพาอาศัยธรรมชาติ มีดิน น้ำ ป่า ภูเขา
แม่น้ำ ด้านปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงอัตลักษณ์ มีปัญหาการปลูกพืชเศรษฐกิจ ไม่เพียงพอ ความยากจน
ยาเสพติด การแต่งงานข้ามชนเผ่า การบริโภค สิ่งที่ทันสมัย ทางสิ่งแวดล้อม การถูกริดรอนพื้นที่ ความเชื่อและ
พิธีกรรมที่ขาดหายไป เยาวชนมีค่านิยมที่ผิด ขาดการสืบทอดแบบดั้งเดิมตลอดจนแนวคิดและจิตใจเปลี่ยนแปลง
สำหรับรูปแบบกระบวนการอัตลักษณ์ชนเผ่ากะเหรี่ยงได้นำเอา มิติทางเศรษฐกิจ มิติทางสังคม และมิติทาง
สิ่งแวดล้อม มาออกแบบเป็นสัญลักษณ์เพื่อใช้ในงานออกแบบแฟชั่นและออกแบบเคหะสิ่งทอ ที่สอดคล้องกับระบบ
เศรษฐกิจเชิงสร้างสรรค์
