Abstract
The objectives of this research were to investigate (1) the environmental and socio-economic impacts of the Pacific White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) culture and (2) the knowledge of natural resources and environmental conservation of the people in Palian District, Trang Province. The study revealed that the two sampled groups had somewhat different opinions towards the level of the environmental and socio-economic impacts of Pacific White Shrimp culture. The shrimp farmers believed that the impacts were moderate, while the respondents having other occupations believed that the impacts were high. Both groups of respondents agreed that discharging untreated wastewater, polluted by chemicals and antibiotics, directly into the canals and sea would deteriorate water quality. The shrimp farmers contended that shrimp farming brought about better socio-economic conditions. The respondents having other occupations were however not certain that was the case. Though the community has been substantially urbanized, the relationship among two groups of respondents are still rural-like: they are considerate, and are always concerned with helping each other. Both samples had moderate level of knowledge about natural resources and environmental conservation. They argued that all people, regardless of where they liveurban or rural areasor their economic status rich or pooror their occupation, should make contribution towards natural resources and environmental conservation.

บทคัดย่อ
วัตถุประสงค์ของการวิจัยครั้งนี้ เพื่อศึกษาผลกระทบของการเลี้ยงกุ้งขาวแวนนาไมต่อสภาพแวดล้อม สังคม เศรษฐกิจ ตลอดจนความรู้พื้นฐานเกี่ยวกับการอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมของประชากรในพื้นที่ อำเภอ ปะเหลียน จังหวัดตรัง ผลการวิจัยพบว่า กลุ่มตัวอย่างทั้งสองกลุ่มมีความเห็นค่อนข้างต่างกัน ในระดับผลกระทบของ การเลี้ยงกุ้งขาวแวนนาไมต่อสภาพแวดล้อม สังคม เศรษฐกิจ เกษตรกรผู้เลี้ยงกุ้งขาวแวนนาไมเห็นว่าการเลี้ยงกุ้งขาว แวนนาไมมีผลกระทบในระดับปานกลาง ในขณะที่ครัวเรือนที่ประกอบอาชีพอื่นๆ เห็นว่า มีผลกระทบมาก กลุ่มตัวอย่าง ทั้งสองกลุ่มเห็นว่า การปล่อยน้ำทิ้งที่ปนเปื้อนสารเคมีและยาปฏิชีวนะต่างๆ จากบ่อเลี้ยงกุ้งขาวแวนนาไมโดยไม่ผ่าน การบำบัดลงสู่ลำคลองจะทำให้คุณภาพน้ำในลำคลองและน้ำทะเลในหมู่บ้านเสื่อมโทรมลง เกษตรกรผู้เลี้ยงกุ้งขาวแวน นาไมเห็นว่า อาชีพการเลี้ยงกุ้งขาวแวนนาไมจะทำให้ลักษณะสังคม และเศรษฐกิจเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปในทางที่ดีขึ้น ในขณะที่ครัวเรือนที่ประกอบอาชีพอื่นๆ ไม่แน่ใจ แม้ว่าความเป็นอยู่จะเปลี่ยนแปลงจากสังคมพื้นบ้านเป็นสังคมเมือง มากขึ้น แต่กลุ่มตัวอย่างยังมีความสัมพันธ์แบบพึ่งพาอาศัยกันและกัน และเอื้อเฟื้อเผื่อแผ่ต่อกัน กลุ่มตัวอย่างทั้งสอง มีความรูพื้นฐานเกี่ยวกับการอนุรักษท์ รัพยากรธรรมชาติ และสิ่งแวดลอ้ มอยู่ในระดับปานกลาง และเห็นว่ามนุษย์ทุก คนไม่ว่าผู้นั้นจะอยู่ในเมืองหรือชนบท จะรวยหรือจนหรือมีอาชีพใดก็ตาม ควรมีส่วนช่วยในการอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากร ธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม
