Library Automation System: From Dependence to Self Reliance

Abstract
An automated library system is a very crucial information system for todays libraries as it increases efficiency in library work and facilitates library service. Most academic libraries in Thailand have to rely on overseas library automation systems, despite the high costs, because of their standard and convenience. Prince of Songkla University (PSU), which has five campuses, therefore, seeks to develop its own library automation system to reduce dependence upon overseas products. This article gives an account of the authors involvement and experiences in the system development. It explains how the PSU library system has evolved from a manual system to the current system, ALIST--Automated Library System for Thai Higher Education Institutes. The concept of selt-reliance, strategies used to overcome obstacles, and key success factors in developing ALIST are also highlighted.

บทคัดย่อ
ระบบห้องสมุดอัตโนมัติเป็นระบบสารสนเทศที่สำคัญสำหรับห้องสมุดในยุคปัจจุบัน เนื่องจากเป็นระบบที่ช่วยให้กระบวนการของผู้ปฏิบัติงานในห้องสมุดมีประสิทธิภาพและอำนวยความสะดวกให้แก่ผู้ใช้บริการ ห้องสมุดสถาบันอุดมศึกษาในประเทศไทยส่วนใหญ่ใช้ระบบห้องสมุดอัตโนมัติสำเร็จจากต่างประเทศซึ่งเป็นระบบที่มีมาตรฐานและใช้งานสะดวกในการดำเนินงานแม้ว่าจะมีค่าใช้จ่ายค่อนข้างสูง มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ ซึ่งมีวิทยาเขต 5 แห่ง และมีห้องสมุดอยู่ในทุกวิทยาเขตจึงมีแนวคิดที่จะพัฒนาระบบห้องสมุดอัตโนมัติขึ้นใช้เอง เพื่อลดการพึ่งพาจากต่างประเทศ บทความนี้เป็นการเล่าประสบการณ์ของผู้เขียนในฐานะที่เป็นผู้เกี่ยวข้องและมี ส่วนร่วมในการพัฒนาระบบตั้งแต่การทำงานด้วยมือสู่การพัฒนาระบบห้องสมุดอัตโนมัติ จนมาเป็นระบบห้องสมุด อัตโนมัติสำหรับสถาบันอุดมศึกษาไทย รวมถึงการก้าวข้ามอุปสรรคและปัจจัยความสำเร็จในการพัฒนาระบบ
