Effects of Computer - Assisted Instruction on Students' Achievemets in Abstract Algebra

Abstract
The purposes of this study were 1) to assess the efficiency of the CAI with the 80/80 standardized criterion on 5 topics of Abstract Algebra: Z, Zn, Un, Sn and the direct product of groups 2) to compare the students pretest and posttest achievements; and 3) to explore problems relating to the use of CAI. The subjects were 29 3rd-year Prince of Songkla University students majoring in mathematics who were enrolled in the Abstract Algebra course in the academic year 2003. A questionnaire, in-depth interviews and classroom observation were used in collecting the data. Paired t-test was undertaken to analyze the data. It was found that the efficiency of the CAI on all topics met the 80/80 standardized criterion. Scores significantly increased in the posttest on Z and Zn, but not on Un, Sn and the direct product of groups. Students had good attitudes toward the Abstract Algebra course and they were highly satisfied with the CAI. However, 72.4 % of the subjects faced some difficulties in using the CAI. Problems included the rigid syntax of the CAI and the calculation was very time-consuming if n was too large.

บทคัดย่อ
การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) วิเคราะห์หาประสิทธิภาพของคอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอนพีชคณิตนามธรรม โดยกำหนดเกณฑ์ว่าไม่ต่ำกว่าเกณฑ์ 80/80 ใน 5 หัวข้อ คือ เรื่อง Z Zn Un Sn และกลุ่มผลคูณตรง 2) ประเมินผลสัมฤทธิ์ของการเรียน พีชคณิตนามธรรมโดยการใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอนพีชคณิตนามธรรม 3) ศึกษาปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นจากการใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอน พีชคณิตนามธรรม กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ นักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 3 วิชาเอกคณิตศาสตร์ คณะวิทยาศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ วิทยาเขตหาดใหญ่ ที่ลงทะเบียนเรียนรายวิชาพีชคณิตนามธรรม ภาคเรียนที่ 1 ปีการศึกษา 2546 จำนวน 29 คน เก็บรวบรวม ข้อมูลโดยการใช้แบบสอบถาม การสังเกตการณ์ในห้องปฏิบัติการคอมพิวเตอร์และการสัมภาษณ์แบบเจาะลึก วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้ Paired t-test ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ประสิทธิภาพของคอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอนเป็นไปตามเกณฑ์ที่กำหนดไว้ คะแนนการทดสอบหลังเรียนคอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอนพีชคณิตนามธรรมเพิ่มขึ้นในหัวเรื่อง Z และ Zn ส่วนในหัวเรื่อง Sn Un และกลุ่มผลคูณตรง ไม่พบว่า คะแนนการทดสอบหลังเรียนด้วยคอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอนพีชคณิตนามธรรมเพิ่มขึ้น นักศึกษาส่วนใหญ่มีเจตคติที่ดีต่อรายวิชาพีชคณิตนามธรรมและมีความพึงพอใจอยู่ในระดับมากที่ได้ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอนพีชคณิตนามธรรม อย่างไรก็ตาม ร้อยละ 72.4 ของนักศึกษามีปัญหาในการใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอนพีชคณิตนามธรรม เรื่องการป้อนข้อมูลเวลาตอบเพราะว่าจำรูปแบบการป้อนคำตอบไม่ได้ เวลาทำแบบทดสอบเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์จะสุ่มค่า n ให้มากเกินไปทำให้เสียเวลาในการคำนวณ
