An Analytical Study of Soccer News Translation in the Stars Soccer Daily Newspaper

Abstract
This documentary research aimed at studying Thai language usage and techniques of adjustment in translating soccer news of the Stars Soccer daily newspaper. One-hundred pieces of news have been selected on the basis of random sampling. The results showed that Thai language usage in translating headlines of soccer news consisted of: 1) transliterations of proper nouns and loan words; 2) abbreviations, shortened words by using Thai punctuation marks and words with parts shortened; 3) doublets; 4) exaggerated words or phrases; 5) slang; 6) connotations; 7) signs, aliases, and nicknames; 8) words depicting images; 9) colloquial words; and 10) technical terms related to soccer. In translating the body of soccer news, the translators also used a poetic word in addition to the ten types of Thai language usage found in the headlines. In the translated headlines of soccer news, the techniques of adjustment at lexical and sentence levels were used appropriately in terms of word addition, word omission, word or phrase replacement, statement addition, statement omission, statement shortening, and changing phrases into sentences. As for translating the body of soccer news, three levels of adjustment, lexical, sentence and paragraph, were performed together using such techniques as word addition, word omission, word or phrase replacement, statement switching, changing passive sentences into active sentences, and paragraph rearrangement. All techniques of adjustment were employed by the translators aiming to produce good translations. The findings of this study can further the development of existing translation guidelines, to streamline translating practices and to bring in consistency.

บทคัดย่อ
การศึกษาเชิงวิเคราะห์การแปลข่าวกีฬาฟุตบอล: กรณีศึกษาหนังสือพิมพ์สตาร์ ซอคเก้อร์ ฉบับรายวัน มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะภาษาไทยในบทแปลข่าวกีฬาฟุตบอล และการปรับบทแปลข่าวกีฬาฟุตบอลของหนังสือพิมพ์สตาร์ ซอคเก้อร์ ฉบับรายวัน โดยการศึกษาครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงเอกสาร ผู้วิจัยเลือกข่าวจำนวน 100 ข่าวเป็นกลุ่มตัวอย่างในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ในบทแปลพาดหัวข่าวกีฬาฟุตบอล ลักษณะภาษาไทยที่พบได้แก่ 1) การถ่ายทอดตัวอักษรและการใช้คำทับศัพท์ 2) การใช้อักษรย่อ คำย่อ และคำตัด 3) การใช้คำซ้อน 4) การใช้คำและวลีรุนแรงเกินจริง 5) การใช้คำสแลง 6) การใช้คำที่มีความหมายโดยนัย 7) การใช้สัญลักษณ์ สมญานาม และชื่อเล่น 8) การปรุงแต่งภาษาเพื่อให้เห็นภาพ 9) การใช้ภาษาพูด และ 10) การใช้คำศัพท์เฉพาะที่เกี่ยวกับวงการฟุตบอล ในส่วนของบทแปลตัวข่าวกีฬาฟุตบอล ผู้วิจัยพบลักษณะภาษาไทยเช่นเดียวกับในบทแปลพาดหัวข่าว นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าผู้แปลใช้คำศัพท์ที่สูงกว่าภาษาปกติอีกด้วย ในการปรับบทแปลพาดหัวข่าวกีฬาฟุตบอล ผู้แปลปรับบทแปลทั้งในระดับคำ และระดับประโยค อาทิเช่น การเติมคำ การตัดคำ การแทนที่คำหรือวลี การเพิ่มความ การตัดความ การรวบความ และการปรับวลีเป็นประโยค เป็นต้น และในส่วนของการปรับบทแปลตัวข่าว ผู้แปลปรับบทแปลทั้งในระดับคำ และระดับประโยค อาทิเช่น การเติมคำ การตัดคำ การแทนที่คำหรือวลี การสลับความ การปรับประโยคที่มีรูปกรรมวาจกให้เป็นกรรตุวาจก เป็นต้น และผู้แปลปรับบทแปลในระดับที่สูงกว่าประโยค ซึ่งได้แก่ การจัดย่อหน้าใหม่ โดยการปรับบทแปลทั้งหมดทำให้ข่าวกีฬาฟุตบอลฉบับแปลสื่อความหมายได้สมบูรณ์ยิ่งขึ้น และผลการศึกษาในครั้งนี้จะเป็นแนวทางให้กับผู้แปลข่าวกีฬาฟุตบอล และผู้ที่สนใจด้านการแปลต่อไปได้
