Does Realism still Dominate the theory and practice of International Relations?

Abstract

The end of the Cold War had led the academia to assume that Realism was obsolete in both theory and practice of International Relations (IR). However, the incident of 11 September 2001 has falsified that assumption. This short article argues that IR is hitherto dominated by Realism because of the four reasons: 1) the tradition of the US foreign policy, 2) the heritage of the Cold War, 3) the American dominion of IR academia, and 4) the applicability of its tradition to the current international politics.

บทคัดย่อ
การสิ้นสุดลงของสงครามเย็นทำใหแ้ วดวงวิชาการ เชื่อว่าแนวคิดสัจนิยมกลายเป็นเรื่องที่ล้าสมัยทั้งใน ทางการปฏิบัติและทางทฤษฎีความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง ประเทศ ทว่าเหตุการณ์ในวันที่ 11 กันยายน 2001 ไดพิ้สูจนว์ า่ ความเชื่อดังกลา่ วไมเ่ ปน็ ความจริง บทความ ขนาดสั้นนี้เสนอว่าแนวคิดสัจนิยมยังคงครอบงำ สาขาวิชาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศจนกระทั่ง ปัจจุบัน ทั้งนี้ด้วยเหตุผลสี่ประการได้แก่ แบบแผน ของนโยบายต่างประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา มรดกของ สงครามเย็น การครอบงำแวดวงวิชาการของสหรัฐฯ และความสามารถในการนำไปใช้กับการเมืองระหว่าง ประเทศปัจจุบัน
