Abstract
The study on Bangkok urban plaza in the new Rattanakosin Period (King Rama IV-Rama VII before
political change) aims to identify factors influencing the establishment of Bangkok urban plazas, the uses and
the type(s) of urban plaza in this period, using documentary research technique. The finding shows that Dusit
Palace Plaza, established in the reign of King Rama V, was the only one urban plaza in this period. Western
influence that forced rulers of this period to modernize the city was an external factor for its establishment.
Activities in the plaza also reflected western influence such as drinking coffee and listening to western music
bands. This was also the first plaza where political activity was held. The style of this plaza reflected Renaissance
school of urban design.
