Abstract
The rat race for the so-called academic excellence, coupled with the lure of rewards in terms of public
and corporate funding under various guises, has more than disfigured the essence of university life. Aping
quality-control mechanisms of the business and industrial world, many universities have been operating like
business concerns, whereby the role of research has been put in the forefront, particularly in those areas in
which research findings can generate production and income, or at least create tangible social impact. The
humanities and certain branches of the social sciences have been victimized in the process, and young
recruits enter the university system today under the compulsion of having to produce, not necessarily
knowledge and wisdom commensurate with their respective callings, but scientific papers that can be
published in international journals, an outer garb that is supposed to represent an noble act which will
secure the home institution a decent ranking among institutions worldwide. Against all the odds, groups of
courageous survivors continue to pursue their traditional task of teaching and research that should constitute
the daily life of academics, whereby inclination and duty conspire to create works of real merit that arise
from the pleasure of pursuing knowledge and wisdom. It is the collegial solidarity within these academic
diasporas that the speaker wishes to highlight, for in his experience research of true significance only
thrives if and when an aesthetic sense predominates both the originating and the receiving ends.
