Abstract
The STS approach is a form of teaching and learning of science focusing on student-centered strategies and enabling student to view science and technology within an immediate real-life context. It would also enable students to value science in terms of life survival factors and to utilize the knowledge gained to greater benefit. The STS approach starts out with the student’ own questions or problems, or with situations constructed by the teacher in order to encourage the student to find out the answers. What is covered by the STS approach is relevant to the students. They will become aware that science is a means of learning about themselves and for themselves, and that science is reality of life worth learning. Science can be learnt not just in school, in a classroom, or in a science laboratory, but practically everywhere. Society and community are the reservoirs of learning, a large open laboratory where scientific method can be practiced and scientific concepts can be formulated out of real situations or contexts. Through the STS approach, students would be able to form scientific concepts by themselves, and consequently acquire mastery of science, technology and social literacy. They would gain insight into the interactions among these three aspects, and be able to apply their knowledge in daily life. In addition, they would become more rational, with greater critical thinking ability. They would know how to improve themselves, be cooperative, and be able to fulfil their responsibilities as members of the community and society at large. Keywords: Science Education, Teaching Science, STS Approach, STS Literacy
