หลักสำคัญประการหนึ่งของการให้การปรึกษาคือ การให้ผู้รับบริการรู้จักตัดสินใจโดยใช้ปัญญาแก้ปัญหา การรู้จักตนเองถือเป็นปัญญาอย่างหนึ่ง การให้การปรึกษาที่ดีจึงต้องทำให้ผู้มารับบริการรู้จักตนเองในทุก ๆ ด้าน ปัญญาที่สำคัญนอกเหนือจากการรู้จักตนเองคือ ปัญญาในการรู้และเข้าใจสัจธรรมตามธรรมชาติที่เป็นจริง

One important principle of counseling is to let counselees cope with their own problems intellectually. Knowing oneself is regarded as a kind of intellectual ability. To give good counsel is to make the counselee have a thorough understanding of his own self. In addition to knowing oneself, one has to learn to understand the true nature of thinks.
